First West Nile Mosquito Activity Reported In Northern Illinois

The Illinois Department of Public Health reports that a batch of mosquitoes in northern Illinois have tested positive for the mosquito-borne illness. However, a common mosquito on Connecticut's shoreline can carry the Zika virus, so the state wants to especially monitor that this summer.

"Zika can be passed from moms to babies during pregnancy and there are strong links between the virus and a brain-related type of birth defect known as microcephaly", Bryan said. "Their partners also need to know the risks". Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. Among those who become ill, symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph nodes.

Like with Zika virus, most people infected with WNV do not know.

"Avoiding mosquito bites is key with either disease", Bryan said.

According to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, minimizing your risk can be achieved by wearing light-colored long-sleeve shirts and long trousers and using an insect repellant with diethyltoluamide (DEET). Fix or replace screens that have tears or other openings. "Mosquito surveillance efforts will continue to be engaged in the woodland swamp areas where EEE and West Nile virus have been historically detected in Madison County". To date, Zika virus has not been confirmed in any Wyoming resident.
