Fear of tsunami after 7.7 magnitude earthquake hits Russia”

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake hit at a 11.7km depth in the Pacific some 200km from Nikolskoe, a village located on the Bering Island off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula.

The quake was followed by several aftershocks, including a couple above magnitude 5.0.

Homeland Security says the earthquake was reported at 9:34 am with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4.

Less than an hour later, a 7.8 quake rattled the same Lomandorskiye Ostrave region of Russia.

However, the tsunami threat has now passed, and the previously issued tsunami advisory for the Aleutian Islands is no longer in effect.

Tsunami waves were possible for coasts within 186 miles of the earthquake epicenter, officials said.

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Monday evening off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.

It is not yet clear what kind of damage the earthquake has caused, if any. This includes part of the eastern Russia coastline.

This is a developing story, more details awaited.
