Red Sox designate 3B Sandoval for assignment”

The New York Yankees are rolling out southpaw Jordan Montgomery on Friday, prompting Young to get the nod over lefty-swinging Andrew Benintendi to start the second half of the season. Sandoval was not in the lineup last night for the Pawtucket Red Sox hinting a move was coming.

Sandoval's hitting.250 on his current rehab assignment (13-for-52), with one home run, 12 strikeouts and 3 RBIs.

Check out Katie's Yankeemetrics post for more fun with numbers. Sandoval appeared in just 161 games for the Boston Red Sox and he hit.237 with a.286 on-base percentage. Their pitching staff has been the driving force behind their success, with the third-best park-adjusted ERA in the majors, and the fourth best WAR.

Once the Red Sox release him, thus locking in their financial commitment, someone (maybe the Giants?) is likely to take another (low-cost) chance on him, and he will wear another uniform, collecting Red Sox checks, a constant reminder of the risks of big-money, guaranteed contracts, and the steep cost when you bet big and lose. The offense must not start and stop with rookie sensation Aaron Judge and catcher Gary Sanchez. It's difficult to see this offense as anything less than potent, but they're still waiting to truly break out.

It proved more challenging than he imagined.

The Kung Fu Panda has been KO'd. He was worth negative Wins Above Replacement in each of his three seasons in Boston. It's hard to believe his defense could be markedly improved.

The problem is that the Sox can't just snap their fingers and keep him on the DL. He lost his starting third base job to Travis Shaw and played just three games before having season-ending shoulder surgery. He missed nearly two months, so that's understandable - but he didn't look like the Price of old last year, either. Instead he signed with the Red Sox three years ago.
