Pochettino on Rose's 'Google' jab: People didn't know me either!”

Rose suggested that he didn't want to have to look up any new Tottenham signings on the internet, with the England worldwide keen for his side to spend big this summer.

Tottenham allowed Kyle Walker to leave for Manchester City for a fee which could rise to £50 million, whilst Nabil Bentaleb, Clinton N'Jie and Federico Fazio have also departed on permanent deals.

The 27-year-old told The Sun on the eve of the new season that "I know my worth and I will make sure I get what I am worth" and implored the board to sign "world-class players" and "not players you have to google and say, 'who's that?'".

Under chairman Daniel Levy, Spurs have tended to sign young players with potential, including Rose himself in 2007, or foreign players untested in English football - an approach supported by Pochettino. "I don't think it's a matter to joke about because with some of the worldwide players today, maybe one or two years ago, none of us knew them very well", Pochettino said.

When you sign players like Eric Dier, who are internationals today, nobody knew him.

It is understood that Chelsea target Rose has been fined two weeks' wages - a sum in the region of £135,000 - for his comments and Pochettino insists the defender's apology has brought the matter to a close.

"Also, when I first arrived here, people wanted to know, 'who is Mauricio Pochettino?' too".

Tottenham are the only side from the Premier League's top six last season who have not made additions in the transfer market but Pochettino remains confident of the capabilities of a team who stormed to a second-place finish last time around. I'm just not buying the idea that we don't need anyone.

And while he accepts players want to move, he says Rose has shown a lack of respect towards his employers.

"I'm relaxed because when you see the team and players they are so focused", he added.

Asked if he could influence what the players are paid, Pochettino said: "I'm not involved in negotiation, no". I think Harry is one of the best strikers in the world.

"He obviously would not want that, because you don't want to be going into a season when the whole team is down". You reflect upon people's character by what they do and how they behave.
