Giants muster two singles against Greinke in 93rd loss”

Saturday's 2-0 win over the San Francisco Giants was one of those perfect nights for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Over at AT&T Park on Sunday, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Francisco Giants will be wrapping up their weekend series.

SAN FRANCISCO - The ace pitcher threw eight shutout innings, the closer recorded a perfect ninth and the star slugger belted a difference-making home run. Nonetheless, the Giants fell to 3-13 in his starts.

Ray reaching 200 strikeouts makes it the 12th 200-strikeout season in franchise history and the second time two teammates have done it, with Zack Greinke reaching the mark earlier this week.

Greinke and Brandon Drury had two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks, who improved to a season-best 25 games over.500. Joe Panik and Pence hit back-to-back doubles in the first inning. Giants RF Hunter Pence (back spasms) sat out the game after suffering the injury diving for a fly ball in Friday's loss.

Goldschmidt's two-run homer in the first inning Saturday night doomed Madison Bumgarner to his fourth straight loss.

Samardzija allowed three earned runs and struck out seven. He lost his fifth straight decision and is winless in last seven starts.

He left the field to a standing ovation.

"This year just hasn't worked out for us and it's frustrating for everybody", Bumgarner said. "The stadium is still pretty full and it's still an awesome place to play".

"Anytime you go out there and you feel like you throw the ball good enough to give your team a chance to win, you got to look at the positive stuff ... obviously we didn't win, that's our main goal is to go out there and win".

Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless ninth for his 38th save. He also speared a sharp one-hopper and flipped to start a double play.

During that span, Ray hadn't walked more than two hitters in any start or given up more than four hits. Greinke slid headfirst into third base during the fifth inning, getting tagged out on a fielder's choice.

"Nothing Goldy does surprised me". "Tell him to never do that again". The Giants celebrated Hall of Famer 1B Orlando Cepeda's 80th birthday before the game.

The Giants will exercise their 2018 club option for LHP Matt Moore. David Peralta had previously singled to lead off the inning and Goldschmidt's homer drove him in. Manager Torey Lovullo said Martinez started experiencing discomfort on Wednesday night but played the next day and hit a home run against Colorado.

He was not whom a weak Giants lineup needed to see. OF Gorkys Hernandez is day to day with a left wrist sprain.

"When Greinke is on and hitting the edges, he's real tough", Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Diamondbacks: RHP Taijuan Walker (9-7, 3.32 ERA) will pitch Sunday's series finale. He's 3-1 with a 3.26 ERA in five career starts against the Giants.

If not for the Giants' total flop in the outfield this season, along with their tumble from contention, Hernandez probably wouldn't have made it through May on the roster. He's 0-1 with a 3.27 ERA in two career starts against the Diamondbacks.
