Astros knock out Red Sox, advance to ALCS”

"He's an extremely talented kid, and I think we marvel at the fact that he's 20 years of age", Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

Bogaerts got a 3-1 95 mph down the middle from Charlie Morton, and crushed it to the Red Sox bullpen for his first post-season home run.

Over the next three games of the series, Altuve kept hitting and Springer went 7-for-13 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Obviously, they won it all that year, but they did it with a group of tough veterans who held themselves accountable and took the field every day with something to prove.

Carlos Beltran added to his post-season legacy with an RBI double in the ninth _ an insurance run that became the game-winner when Rafael Devers hit an inside-the-park homer off closer Ken Giles over leaping centre fielder George Springer and off the Green Monster toward centre.

It was all Houston until Benintendi blew the doors off Justin Verlander and gave the Red Sox a 3-2 lead. "I mean, we won the division", said Pedroia. It was clear at that point Houston was playing for keeps, wholly uninterested in allowing things to get to a Game 5.

Farrell was ejected from Game 4 of Boston's AL Division Series matchup with the Houston Astros for arguing balls and strikes. Anthony Rizzo had the game winning hit, breaking a 1-1 tie when he blooped a single in the eighth inning, and if you no longer see the Cubs as the lovable losers they were for more than a century after winning the World Series last year, your opinion won't change after hearing how Rizzo yelled "respect me" at the top of his lungs after the hit, apparently feeling slighted that Nats manager Dusty Baker elected to pitch to him with first base open and a man on second rather than face Wilson Contreras. "It was very emotional, probably the most emotion I've ever had on a baseball field the day we [came back after the storm] and played that doubleheader, when you had our city underwater". Based on this foolproof one-more-win-per-postseason progression, they're going to be needed for a parade. He said his first order of business this offseason would be to consult with doctors on his options.

Boston's season is over, and fans will now spend the winter months wondering what-if.

With Ortiz in 2016 Boston led the AL in team batting average (.282) and RBIs (836).

As is the rule with interference plays, the umpires get to decide where any runners are placed on the bases.

In the third, Benintendi had a hard-hit single to right.

The lineup is almost certain to be improved next year, even without the acquisition of someone such as Hosmer (who would fit perfectly) or J.D. Martinez.

Farrell has one year left on his contract after the Red Sox's decision in December to guarantee his 2018 club option. Roberto Perez was the catcher for the second straight night rather than Game 2 star Yan Gomes.

Leading 6-2 heading into the top of the eighth at ear-splitting Minute Maid Park, with baseball's biggest surprise just six outs away from clinching a stunning ALCS berth.

Springer and Yuli Gurriel each had three hits for the AL West champions, and Reddick's go-ahead single made up for misplaying a fly ball into a home run in Game 3 to force a fourth game.

One issue going forward could be who to go to next.

Hinch's 2017 Astros started to blow it again.

Houston looks like the real deal.

The Red Sox obviously need to add power to their lineup, but the problem is as much in the clubhouse as it is on the diamond.

Boston squandered chances in the second and third inning.

Chris Sale's first season as a member of the Red Sox didn't end the way he would have liked - taking two of the three losses of the ALDS against the Astros - but he knows the team has a bright future. And I know it's not easy.
