Pixel 2 XL Teardown Reveals Google's Custom Pixel Visual Core SoC”

Beyond the fixability rating we always look forward to, this Pixel 2 teardown makes some pretty interesting discoveries. Alternatively you can have 256GB for a whopping £849.

The PVC chip is built into every Pixel 2 phone, and is currently dormant in both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, so it will be a nice bonus for buyers when its capabilities finally go live.

It has added in dual front-facing stereo speakers to give you great sound at loud levels. Factory reset the old phone and mail it to Google using the prepaid envelope. The IP67 rating means the Pixel 2s can be dunked in 1 m (3.3 ft) of water for up to half an hour, while the V30's slightly-higher rating means it can survive that long down to 1.5 m (4.9 ft). Still, we wouldn't recommend testing this with anything more than a splash of rain. The 64GB Pixel 2 is $649 or $27.04 a month over 24 months.

Google said it will enable PVC as an option in the developer preview of Android Oreo 8.1, and will later enable it for all third-party apps using the Android Camera API, giving them access to Google's powerful HDR+ photography capabilities. The 5-inch Pixel 2 doesn't achieve the same brightness as the 2 XL, but it does win out in terms of white balance and color representation, and doesn't produce the same kind of spottiness with solid colors. When Google's wireless Pixel Buds roll out in November, they'll be able to translate spoken foreign language in real time-a feature exclusive to the Pixel 2. But until that happens, you could argue that the Pixel 2 XL is the best phone on the planet-even if it doesn't have a headphone jack. As apps and other features have become so similar across devices, the camera has quickly become the main battlefront in the phone wars. It also has some new hardware improvements.

For size, the iPhone 8 is a bit smaller in all dimensions but it also has a smaller screen. Apple's ecosystem is one of the biggest draws of an iPhone. iOS and its robust app store make the iPhone a no-brainer. It's leading in the ambient computing and artificial intelligence game. I read somewhere that reviewers gave the phone to people who thought the phone was made out of plastic, but that's just because those people must have been heathens.

If you feel like forking out for an extra accessory, the V30 can be charged wirelessly. But the problems unfortunately run even deeper than that. The OnePlus 5 is missing some premium features like wireless charging and iris scanning. And it can perform the same trick with the front camera too.

This one is a surprise from Google.

The good news for early adopters is that Google has started shipping the pre-orders, with some buyers already receiving the device. There isn't a whole lot to it - it's just a circuit board lined with metal blocks that are connected by strain gauges - but the way those metal blocks are aligned allow the strain gauges to pick up even slight squeezes.

The major hardware drop earlier this month from Google heralded a new era of innovation for the company, and now one detail has come to the fore: the Pixel Visual Core (PVC).

When put side-by-side with the Galaxy S8, CNET found that the Pixel 2 XL's display was less saturated, even when the XL's vivid mode was switched on.
