Rise in Third Quarter Deliveries of Tesla, but Model 3 Encounters "Bottleneck"

Tesla said that in the third quarter it drop-shipped 26,150 vehicles, along with 11,865 no. of Model X cars, 14,065 Model S vehicles, which is 17.7 percent up from the second quarter of this year. In many cases, the cars qualify for a $2,500 state rebate and a $7,500 federal rebate.

There are several reasons why Tesla's plan has failed, but the main one involves production bottlenecks. Meanwhile, Tesla saw a jump in its Model X of 112 percent, to 33,415 units delivered, while the Lexus LX SUV has seen its sales grow by roughly 10 percent in 2017, to 4,051 units. However, the most in-demand model from the brand, the Model 3's deliveries are not up to the mark.

The Model 3 is Tesla's first car for the mass market, with a price tag starting at $35,000, moving beyond its niche as a provider of luxury vehicles that typically sell for more than $100,000.

"It is important to emphasise that there are no fundamental issues with the Model 3 production or supply chain", the company said.

Tesla says it is confident of addressing the manufacturing bottlenecks that have hampered production of its competitively-priced Model 3 electric car.

"Initial Model 3 production was still just 260 units vs. our 1,000 estimate and targets closer to 1,500 due to early manufacturing bottlenecks; but, we think judging Model 3 on its first couple months vs. the breakthrough potential we expect it to deliver over the next 3 years would be extremely shortsighted", Cihra said in a report. Tesla produced roughly 85,000 vehicles in 2016 and plans to make half a million in 2018.

Tesla said yesterday that a handful of systems at its Fremont plant in California and its battery factory in Reno, Nevada, "have taken longer to activate than expected". Getting the estimated 500,000 deposit-holders in the driver's seat will require building more cars than the company's entire production output since its founding. Tesla has also shown that once it gets the things right, it can easily maintain that speed.

The Model 3 production numbers were included in an investor message, posted online, that touted "our all time best quarter for Model S and X deliveries". "Making cars is not an easy business, and they're finding that out".
