Philippines launches probe into dengue vaccine scare”

Sanofi Pasteur said Dengvaxia did provide persistent protective benefit in those who had previously had dengue.

"As far as we are made aware, there are no reported deaths that are related to dengue vaccination", said Dr. Ruby Dizon, a medical director at the French firm.

Despite its promise and €1bn-plus in sales projections it barely got out of the starting blocks before running into difficulties, which have been blamed on political disruption and economic problems in its first approved markets, and the Indian governments refusal to waive a requirement for local clinical trials of the vaccine. CVS on Sunday said it planned to buy Aetna for $69 billion.

More than 733,000 youngsters in the Philippines have been administered Dengvaxia - the world's first anti-dengue vaccine.

Hundreds of thousands of youngsters in the Philippines, from ages nine and up, received a dose last year and Department of Health (DOH) spokesman Eric Tayag said the country is preparing for the 'worst-case scenario', Sky News said.

The sweeping tax overhaul that passed the U.S. Senate on Saturday contains the Republicans' biggest blow yet to former President Barack Obama's healthcare law, repealing the requirement that all Americans obtain health insurance.

This figure represents majority of the people who live in areas where dengue is highly endemic, including the Philippines.

"I will have it investigated and I will prepare ASAP the appropriate department order (DO)".

"For those not previously infected by dengue virus, however, the analysis found that in the longer term, more cases of severe disease could occur following vaccination upon a subsequent dengue infection", the company said in a statement.

"We see fewer hospitalisation and fewer cases of severe dengue among those who were vaccinated against those who received a placebo", she said.

The virus kills about 20,000 people a year and infects hundreds of millions.

Sanofi officials on Monday sought to allay concerns over Dengvaxia's use by downplaying the scope of possible infections.

Joselito Sta. Ana, Sanofi Pasteur regional director, also noted that 9 out of 10 Filipinos are exposed to dengue by the time they reach adolescence but only three-fourths of the cases are asymptomatic.

"In addition, the producer has to meet seven conditions before the product can be brought into Malaysia".

"Of course, rest assured, monitoring is continuing, we are working with the Department of Health, in collaboration, to make sure this is maintained", Pasteue said.

Peing said she would not recommend Dengvaxia for those who have never been infected.
