A sheriff's official says a woman has been found dead after a car crash in an area under a mandatory evacuation order as the largest of the wildfires raged in Southern California.

The blaze, which began on Monday, had charred more than 50,000 acres, they said.

"These are days that break your heart, but these are also days that show the resilience of our city", Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said.

"I was telling the boys, at the time the decision we made was to get out of here as fast as possible to keep ourselves safe", Kermode said.

"There's enough fire around; there's dry fuel; the humidity is still low".

As The Associated Press notes, "The wilder winds could easily make new fires explode too, as one did Wednesday in Los Angeles' exclusive Bel-Air section, where a fire consumed multimillion-dollar houses that give the rich and famous sweeping views of Los Angeles".

At least four major fires had engulfed large tracts of land in the metro area's north and west, with the Thomas Fire reaching 90,000 acres by Thursday morning. NASA's Earth Observatory captured satellite images showing the extent of the wildfires where a steady stream of smoke is visible, streaming over the Pacific.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is warning area residents and visitors that apps that offer driving directions are sometimes suggesting routes through regions that are ablaze, The Los Angeles Times reported.

ThomasFire [update] Hwy 150 and Hwy 126, north of Santa Paula (Ventura County) is now 96,000 acres and 5% contained.

N95 masks are available to people in the cities of Goleta, Santa Barbara and Carpinteria.
