176 workers impacted by Baton Rouge Sam's Club closure”

Sam's Club closings are happening this year as Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) said that the company is shuttering the doors of 63 of its locations.

Walmart announced on Thursday it would increase its minimum hourly wage to $11 in February for all hourly employees in the U.S. The company also said it would give hourly employees one-time bonuses of between $200 and $1,000, depending on seniority.

The store closures - and the layoffs that happen because of them - prove that Walmart is willing to endure some pain in the short term for long-term gain as it sets its sights on its largest rival online: Amazon. "Our focus today has been on those associates and their communities, and communicating with them", said John Furner, president and CEO of Sam's Club.

Many of the company's more than one million employees will get wage increases, but they'll also see benefits from the benefits changes Walmart plans to make.

Diana Leavitt Lanham, of Loveland, OH, said she worked at Sam's Club for three years as an overnight stocker before she was terminated Thursday. Fitz had been pleased earlier to read the news that Walmart was boosting starting salaries and offering bonuses. "We need $15 and full-time to be able to support our families". In all, Walmart employs 2.3 million people around the world, 1.5 million of which are in the U.S.

"We buy other things from here, oh my God I'm shocked", said Alan Annane, a Sam's Club customer.

Viktor Vaseli said employees who lost their jobs can apply to work at other stores.

The Sam's Club located near the Eastwood Towne Center is not affected by the planned closings. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company said it will record a charge of about 14 cents a share related to the closures, mostly in the fourth quarter.

There were reports of stores closing in more than 10 states, including Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. The stores will close for good on Jan. 26. The second week of the new tax year is a little early to be declaring victory.

"There's a lot of traffic that passes by every day so that site's pretty desirable, and we think someone's going to step back in and fill that void".

Following the closures, the company will operate 597 Sam's Club stores.
