IPhone battery overheats, Apple store in Zurich evacuated

The man was trying to fix the phone in an Apple Store on Bahnhofstrasse street in Zurich when the overheated battery exploded. Meanwhile, about 50 employees and customers were ushered out of the Apple Store.

The physical damage to the iPhone battery resulted in a short-circuit between cathode and anode leading to fire and smoke. Police, fire services, and an ambulance were called in to investigate and tend to victims.

Zurich police said the incident occurred as the repair worker was removing the battery, which overheated and burned his hand slightly. It then began emitting smoke, prompting the staff to throw quartz sand on it to contain the smoke and allow it to be ventilated.

Seven people whom were present received medical treatment but did not need to be taken to the hospital.

Apple hasn't commented on the evacuation, however it is believed the device is now being examined by the Zurich Forensic Institute to determine the cause of the issue.

The news comes days after Apple confessed to have deliberately throttled CPU performance in older iPhones to extend battery life.
