Leverkusen offer hope to English clubs chasing Leon Bailey”

Rudi Voller accepts Bayer Leverkusen will struggle to keep hold of Leon Bailey if he continues progressing and believes only Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga have the power to retain star players as long as they want. The Bavarians, eyeing a record-extending sixth consecutive league title, are 11 points clear at the top, having won nine out of 10 league games under coach Jupp Heynckes, who took over in October following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti.

Heynckes affirmed at a news meeting that Lewandowski and protector Mats Hummels will miss the excursion to Leverkusen after the team were not able take a full part in preparing this week.

The game was played at a frenetic pace in the opening 20 minutes and the visitors came close to taking the advantage when Arjen Robben beat Jonathan Tah on the wing, before crossing to Ribéry who saw his strike on goal superbly blocked by Karim Bellarabi in the fifth minute.

Franck Ribery showed Bayern Munich why the Bundesliga leaders should extend his contract as the 34-year-old netted a superb goal in Friday's 3-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen.

The FC crew praise Bayern Munich's Bundesliga dominance, but cast doubt on their ability to win the Champions League, despite favourable odds.

Ribery let fly with a shot inside the near post to make it 2-0 just before the hour mark. The result sees the German giants extend their lead to 14 points in the Bundesliga.

Javi Martinez and Franck Ribery scored either side of the break for Bayern before Kevin Volland pulled one back for the hosts to set up a frantic finale. "In Leverkusen the game is always difficult".

"The joy of playing is back again", said Mueller.

Bayern paid Hoffenheim around €13 million (US$15.4m) last month for Wagner, who was signed as back-up for their top-scoring striker Robert Lewandowski.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino on the potential for new signings: "Until today, now, no-one is close to arriving in this transfer window".

The 30-year-old Wagner, who made his international debut ahead of the Confederations Cup in Russia, could well feature at Leverkusen.

However Rodriguez, on loan from Real Madrid, showed his class by cooly slotting home a free-kick on the edge of the area after being fouled just outside the box.
