South Korea proposes talks on North Korea's participation in winter Olympics”

On Tuesday, North Korea confirmed it would join in the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games which is scheduled for February 9 to 25, following Seoul's proposal that Pyongyang send a large delegation as well as a cheering squad to PyeongChang.

There was "growing concern" in Pyongyang, Vorontsov said, that "different elements of a combined arms operation against North Korea are being methodically rehearsed and that 'zero hour', as they put it, is not too far away".

Bach is supposed to be joined by a delegation from the PyeongChang 2018 Organising Committee and delegations from the National Olympic Committees of both Koreas.

"The South also delivered a document presenting its position regarding the North's participation in the Pyeongchang Olympics and matters on cultural events", the ministry added.

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders adds that the decision presents North Korea with an opportunity to see the value of ending its isolation from the rest of the world.

The North Koreans also expressed their surprise over the popular opinion in South Korea that U.S. President Donald Trump would never start a war in Korea and that the tension, crisis-like atmosphere and belligerent rhetoric are all posturing, according to Vorontsov.

Trump has repeatedly insulted the North Korean leader, describing him as mad and a "rocket man".

"The purpose of it shouldn´t be talks for the sake of talks", he told a news conference, while warning that Pyongyang would face stronger sanctions if "provocations" continued. In spite of the hopeful words about the potential for future talks, the U.S. intelligence assessment of North Korea´s weapons programs has not altered, officials say.

"It will only create divisions within the international community and harm joint efforts to appropriately resolve the Korean peninsula nuclear issue", he said.
